The Platinum Rule verses the Golden Rule

I saw something on Facebook the other day which included the words:

Treat people the way you want to be treated.
Talk to people the way you want to be talked to.

Those statements fit into the sentiment known as the Golden Rule which says that if you treat people the way you want to be treated then all will be well.

Now that is a very good sentiment of course, as most people want to be treated in a nice way and that kind of goes without saying in some sense I suppose.

If we look at how someone is treated from their perspective however, we may well discover that actually they are not exactly the same as us and they actually want to be treated differently to us.

This is where the Platinum rule comes in. Platinum is much rarer than gold implying that this rule is practised less often than the Golden Rule. In fact all the Platinum in the world would fit in an average living room.

Therefore to treat someone as they wish to be treated would mean that they are more likely to appreciate than if you treat them as you would like to be treated.

The trick of course, is to know how they wish to be treated.

Whether this is in terms of the Six Human Needs or in the language of love, knowing how someone wishes to be treated can make the difference between an OK relationship and an amazing one.

Is it time to find out a bit more about how those around you wish to be treated? The easiest way is just to ask them… Communication in all walks of life, whether that is at home or at work is the key to knowing whether you are treating people the way they wish to be treated.
